2009.11.10

We're back this month with some posters and a live DVD.  If that don't get you excited, I don't know what will.  So let's get to it:

BAD DUDES POSTERS

CHRONOTORIOUS is sold out and out of print.  If you still need to get the music, get to Bandcamp.com (where you can choose your donwload format: FLAC, AAC, .MP3, etc.), iTunes and AmazonMP3.  But if you have the album, love the Bad Dudes, and need something else to buy, get to Zazzle.com and buy one of five Bad Dudes posters.  Or all five.  BOOSH!

SEE THE ONEUPS ON THE PAX 2008 DVD

Holy crap this is way better than the video and audio quality in the PAX 2007 DVD.  Get it here first - it's not even on the PAX Web site yet!  Check it out as The OneUps perform Disc II of Volume 2 live for the first time (along with a great encore piece).  This is the best recording of a live performance from the band yet.  And nevermind that you'll get the live performances of Jonathan Coulton, the Minibosses and more.  It's a steal at 20 bucks.  But hurry!  We only have 64 copies!

CLICK HERE TO BUY PAX 2008 DVD SET

Should have some more juicy info for you next month.  Stick around...

MUSIC GALORE

Got a big one this month. Lots of new music to discover. I'm opening up a bit more regarding  the original music I produce as the line has become increasingly blurry between people who will only enjoy my game music arrangements versus those that will listen to "anything." So I hope you'll enjoy some of my work as producer outside of game music. But first, let's get to the greatest band on earth with three capital letters and one space in the name:

THE ONEUPS IN PHILADELPHIA AREA THIS MONTH

Friday & Saturday October 23 & 24 2009 at GameX 2009 in Phoenixville, PA [Show Thread]

We're playing at the GameX 2009 Expo on the show floor. Times are not exact, but should be around 6:30 PM on both Friday and Saturday. Gonna be a lot of fun. You can also see our friends ARMCANNON (who have a new, awesome CD) and The Megas. This trifecta of VGM band radness should be worth the ticket price alone.  (For some other great music you can't live without, Retro Remix Revue is back with [iTunes link] Volume 2 - it's amazing).

THE ONEUPS STORY ON THE ESCAPIST

We recently did a little Q&A with Tom Goldman of Escapist Magazine.Check out the resulting story on The OneUps. Might be the best coverage yet. Click here to read.

THE ONEUPS WERE IN ARIZONA

Good times at KoL Con 6. One of the best events we've ever done. We hope to do it again next year. Check out some media:

CHRONOTORIOUS UPDATE

There a few copies left of the CD. Not a lot. They'll be gone in days. The CD will live on in the digital world via iTunes and AmazonMP3. But my "Bottomed Out (At the Bottom of Night)" and "Forest Steppin' (Secret of the Forest)" are gone, along with Kunal's "Watertite (Ocean Palace)" and "The Bad Ending (Lavos)." We heard a lot of moaning about there being less tracks on the digital release, so we put on one more than we said. You'll now get 11 tracks of awesome. Still, some people didn't understand the idea of a Limited Edition Release. This really shows a sign 'o the times. I remember buying Limited Editions when I was a kid and you got extra stuff, and then a shorter, slightly less cool release was made available indefinitely. Nowadays, people expect the digital release to have the goods (a la iTunes exclusives). I'm not a big fan of that as I, with many of you, am a physical media junkie. I like to hold and touch. But we all need to prepare for the inevitable - the CD will die. The Internets are responding, though. iTunes has the new LP format and I really hope we'll see a future OneUp Studios release take advantage of it. Also, Bandcamp.com (which I'll rave about in the rest of the newsletter) allows an artist to upload additional downloadable content like the booklet as a .PDF, music videos, secret tracks that only come from an album download, etc. But I digress - thank you all for a great release. CHRONOTORIOUS was a blast and we have another little somethin' comin' soon. Watch me.

WELCOME TO BANDCAMP (FLAC STORE)

You asked for it - you got it. Toyota. I found a suitable store for FLAC (and more!) via Bandcamp. I want you to check out The OneUps on Bandcamp.com. The best thing about them is that you can choose what format you want to download - MP3, AAC, FLAC, OGG - even Apple Lossless. If that doesn't float your boat, I don't know what will. And you can purchase from most major countries. So things are lookin' up. Thanks to a couple of hot interns, I have the rest of the OUS catalogue uploaded, too.  Check it out:

SUPPORT GOOD MUSICS

CHICO RAY (comedy)

If you are a sick individual (and I know you are), I want you to check out [NSFW] and buy this album I produced by a sick person, Chico Ray. With Bandcamp.com, you can listen to the entire album online. Also, I have it for sale at $4.99, but you can pay whatever price you want over that (thank you to those who've already chucked in $10.00). I hope some of you will appreciate the insanity and spread the word.  It's along the lines of Adam Sandler's CDs, Tenacious D, The Lonely Island - stuff like that. So if those guys make you laugh, you'll be right at home. There's also a music video for "The First Time." You should check it out. Might see a little cameo...

40 KORLEONE (rap/hip-hop)

If you like Rap and Hip-Hop, but are tired of cheap beats that sound like some kid with no musical knowledge what-so-ever clicked them into a pirated copy of Fruity Loops with the default sounds, check out this album produced by yours truly for 40 Korleone. I made all the music - some with very subtle game music influences - so I'm curious to see what you all think. I also have a Nerdcore album coming with Beefy later and it's very VGM influenced, so that might be more your bag (plus Beefy has song titles like "Geek Out" and "Game Store Girl").

NATHAN MCLEOD (jazz)

Former (and sometimes sit in) member of The OneUps, Nathan McLeod, has released a contemporary Jazz album featuring half standards and half originals. It's certainly worth a listen if you're a fan of Jazz. Nathan is the real deal and I look forward to his next release as it is certain to be even better than the first. I worked as Executive Producer on this project.  Check it out on iTunes or AmazonMP3 below.

Well, that's it for this month's COLOSSAL newsletter!  I hope you find some new musics to enjoy to hold you over until Super Mario Kart Album.  Thanks for reading and see you next month!

CHRONOTORIOUS IS A SUCCESS
CHRONOTORIOUS has been a huge success with the ladies - and with the how are your Gentlmen. Over half the CDs are gone - that means there are less than 500 CDs for you to get your grubby little hands on. Find out what everyone's been calling "the greatest album of our time" and "if Bethoveen were alive and could hear, he'd be listening to CHRONOTORIOUS."

Okay, I just made up that stuff but it's 100% true. Really.

If you haven't bought CHRONOTORIOUS get on it before it's gone. You already want it. What are you waiting for?

By clicking this link, I agree that I am smart and will be ordering this album RIGHT NOW because I have good taste and am smart for buying this CD.

P.S. - WE SHIP TO ALL COUNTRIES. IT JUST COSTS $1 USD MORE. (except Canada - you guys are the same price ;)

The Bad Dudes are back - this time with a full-length CD - and a brand new Web site via Bad Dude Mazedude. Check out the Web site to download and stream all previous releases, along with checking out the samples from the brand new Chrono Trigger arrangement album - CHRONOTORIOUS. The album also features brand new Chrono Trigger fan artwork from Brianne Drouhard, Steph Laberis, and long-time Bad Dudes artwork contributor Maximo V. Lorenzo (a.k.a. 8bitmaximo). Nevermind the fact this music will beat up any other music in your collection (unless it's other Bad Dudes music). Don't be a jerk - pick up this album. WingDamage.com calls the album a "must have," and OriginalSoundVersion.com says the CD contains "amazing remixes." I say, "you buy this or I punch your grandmother." Chuch.

THE ONEUPS - GAME JAM RECAP - CONCERT ONLINE!
We had a BLAST at the Bay Area Game Jam on the Microsoft campus last month!  It was great to meet and hang out with The Megas (and their show was great, too!) and we had a lot of fun poking around the Microsoft headquarters.  If you missed the show, you can still check it out!  Head to Kotaku for links to the FULL CONCERT video and more info.

BAD DUDE TIM SHEEHY FEATURED ON DOUJIN RELEASE
Bizen, who is the man, and yakou invited Tim Sheehy to perform on an upcoming Doujin video game music arrangement release based on the music of The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening. Check out the page here and download the sample .MP3 which, at the end, features Tim's arrangement of "Ballad of the Windfish." Very fine music here. Tim's arrangement is amazing and it's awesome to have one of our own featured on a Japanese Doujin release.  ~m

2009.04.01

Here we are again, you and I. April is upon us. As are the April Showers. Watch out for them!

The OneUps are playing at Microsoft! This weekend on April 4, we're playing on the Microsoft campus for the Bay Area Game Jam! Find out the details here! We've been to San Jose once, but that was a looooong time ago, so if you are in the Bay Area and want to see us, now's the time! It's a FREE show but seating is limited!

The OneUps are also working hard on the upcoming Super Mario Kart album, and the forthcoming Volume 3 - both of which will be excellent (we hope!). Stay up to date with releases by signing up for the mailing list!

We've added the PAX DVD 2007 to the store! You can pick up all 5 DVDs for just $15 (plus shipping and handling). That's right, the greatest selling album of all time* is no available for download from proper digital distribution stores. The revenue from these sales will fund other OneUp Studios releases on iTunes/AmazonMP3 so tell your friends!

* Maybe the best selling video game music fan album of all time, but only because it's been the longest selling video games music fan album.

2009.03.01

Welcome to March! We hope you enjoy your stay. Plan for stupid cold weather because the world is ending and a possible Volcanic Eruption in Memphis.

It's late and I'm tired. [exhale]

So yeah, it's March. Which means I'm going to be a year older and Spring is coming. I love Spring - it's my favourite. It means I'm going to get motivated to get things done. And that I get to air out the house. We're off to a good start of new things for this year. Our new host has been working out awesome, along with our new mailing list (make sure you're signed up!). I just got a beautiful new computer a couple of days ago (and a full week earlier than the estimated shipping date - I love Dell!). SIX GIGS OF RAM!! I'm so pumped! And, coupled with SONAR 8: the OCHO for my birthday, I'm going to be cranking out some serious tunage - namely, my solo album. But there's plenty of good things to come, with the Bad Dudes' CHRONOTORIOUS album, and my work with Beefy and The Grammar Club. Also, The OneUps are cooking up a big one for April/June - we just started working on "Mario Circuit" today and oh em gee it's going to be the hotness. Speaking of TOU, check out this recent interview on GotGame. Catch you next month! ~m

2009.02.10

Already February. Snaps, son! Not much to report, but lots to look forward to. Especially the upcoming Bad Dudes release - CHRONOTORIOUS. It's gonna be so hot, you'll want to slap your mother. Hard. Also, off to a good start on getting all past releases onto iTunes and AmazonMP3. If you haven't picked up Volume 1 or Volume 2 from The OneUps yet, download 'em from these fine stores. CDs are on the way out! An old fuddy-duddy like me can't fight it anymore. Which is why I would like for you to take less than 30 seconds to fill out this survey. This will tell me how to handle the future. I'd really appreciate it. I know these things can be annoying but it shouldn't take you more than 30 seconds. So take the survey and I'll see you next month! ~m

2009.01.01

Big thanks to everyone that bought the Child's Play CD 2008. I hope you all enjoyed it. It's a fantastic album.

For 2009, we'll hopefully see another The OneUps release, along with new music from the Bad Dudes, who are coming into their own. I also hope to have new Web sites built for all things OUS, along with having all OUS releases online at iTunes, amazonmp3 and other eTailers. I'm also changing hosts soon so there'll be a hiccup with some downtime. Well, I think that about covers my 2009 list of STDs (Stuff To Do). I'll make sure to check back and see what all I accomplished.~m

Child's Play CD 2008 is out! I produced this CD with the hopes of raising a bunch of money for the Child's Play Charity. All of the artists donated their music, time and performances here so that 100% of the profit from this CD will go to the charity. It includes a new, exclusive The OneUps track, a remix of Freezepop by me, original productions by me for Beefy, me playing bass with The Grammar Club and lots more cool stuff. check it out and buy it for yourself and several more for gifts for Christmas. Good deal. ~m

November 7, 2008

The OneUps Volume 2 is a success. Lot of people have bought the CD from us and from our eTailers like iTunes, AmazonMP3 and others. We really appreciate everyone's support. Our next project is coming up soon and it's going to be a great time. ha ha ha get it? Time? Yeah... Our mailing list is back up. Be sure to sign up for it. It's going to be good. Gonna be a good rest of the year too. And a good 2009. Forward, march! ~m

September 10, 2008

Oy, I need an assistant. Gotta keep this more current! As you can imagine, I've been really busy finishing Volume 2 and getting ready for / going to PAX. Trying to get back into the swing of things here. Volume 2 is now on sale and selling well! Pick up your copy. 2 Discs. 26 Tracks. 101 Minutes of music. You know you want it. Get it here now. ~m

July 10, 2008

I made a new favicon. Would someone like to make us a new logo? || The OneUps are going to into the studio to record Disc 1 of Volume 2 this weekend. Very sorry to report that not everything we had hoped to get on Volume 2 is going to make it due to circumstances beyond our control. The good news is, I catalogued all of The OneUps' music yesterday and we have 94 pieces in the folder. Wow... That's a lot of music! Here's hoping for many more albums. P.S. - Please someone with a lot of money step in and help us make this thing huge. luvubye. ~m

June 12, 2008

Been a minute. Good news: Sixth Annual oneUp Studios BBQ happened and it was fun. Some people lived. Some people didn't. It was rad. Also, The OneUps recorded Disc 2 of the upcoming Volume 2 to be released on September 2, 2008. Disc 1 to be recorded shortly. Gonna be a helluva two-disc set. For those of you going to PAX, you'll be able to buy the album there before anyone - because it's our CD release party! Rest of yous will get it in the mail/online shortly after. I'm working on a solo album called The World Is Square to release hopefully around Christmas. Reckon you can guess what'll be on that album. Bad news: Not enough hours in the day. Can anyone fix this for me? ~m

April 7, 2008

The OneUps Web site seems moot at this point, so we've done a redirect to the MySpace page. No real loss, though thanks to Mykola for the design. Also, The OneUps pretty much have their new set ready to perform. Some awesome arrangements and recording Disc 2 for Volume 2 takes place in a month! Get ready for the band to bring the radness. There will be a whole bunch of new show dates updated to the MySpace page soon. We're hoping to perform in a city near you. ~m

February 12, 2008

Check out the new PayPal Widget OneUp Studios store. Good for quick purchase of The OneUps - Volume 1 and The OneUps T-Shirts - now in stock in Mens and Womens Tees. Give it a spin and let me know what you think of it. ~m

December 1, 2007

0 With Christmas on the way, we here at OneUp Studios are fully endorsing the Child's Play Charity. By gamers, for gamers, the idea is to help shed the notion that gamers are soulless killers in training, and to make sure people know that gamers are just awesome people. Dale and I are doing some cool stuff for the charity, along with The OneUps. All that will come up as news on other sites so we're not going to bother talking about it. We hope that you'll consider donating to the charity yourself. Also, we're getting ready for MAGFest at the beginning of next year. Hope to see some of you nerds out there. I'm totally pumped about seeing ARMCANNON again and seeing Select Start perform live for the first time. Other awesome bands will be there too so check it out. The best couple of nites in video game music you'll ever experience.

~m

November 1, 2007

0Things have been mucho busy this month. The Bad Dudes got their Halloween EP out in time. Couple of the tracks made it up onto the OverClocked ReMix front page. The OneUps are getting serious about Volume 2 and are picking the tracks to record. A lot of work will be done on that over the holidays as I prepare sheet music for some of the more elaborate stuff (involving additional instrumentation, like a string quartet) so announcements of the music to be on the album will come gradually. The Bad Dudes are hard at work on another EP. Watch for that - it'll be a big one. I think the Bad Dudes are going to take center stage for a while as everything else is simmering in the background. Remember, it takes a long time in the slow cooker to make it perfect. Thanks for your continued support. Tell a friend about The OneUps or a OneUp Studios album you enjoy today!

~m

October 1, 2007

0Fall is in the air. It's my and Dale's favourite time of year. And with Fall comes change. The once thriving, then defunct, and now thriving again OneUp Studios has seen a lot of change. Dale and I are still in the brainstorming stage, but we'll be making some more changes soon. The focus has definitely shifted to The OneUps. So we imagine OUS will become something quiet and scaled down. I'd like to bring my remixing entourage, The Bad Dudes into the fray for remix projects, which are pretty hot right now given the popularity of the recent FFVII arrangement project. The Bad Dudes have had something on the back burner for a while now - I hope we can motivate the boys to get their act together and finish it up, along with starting new projects (like an entire FFIV remake - anyone? anyone?). Also, there's Final Fanboy, which is so popular, the MySpace account keeps getting deleted. Be watching for Final Fanboy tour dates to start popping up later this year.

And so, Dale and I will retire to the study, where we'll smoke fine cigars, sip Cristal, and wax philosophical as we ponder the future of this record label. Until next time...

The OneUps performed at the Penny Arcade eXpo (PAX) last weekend. The performance was a huge success bringing in all sorts of new fans. Here are links to several blogs and videos on the performance, including a link to Wil Wheaton's blog, whom claimed to "fail" by missing The OneUps' performance.

Congrats to Greg, whose game placed in the Top 10 (see contest info below). If he makes at least the top 5 now, he'll pull down a grand! Sweet!

Most news these days lies with The OneUps. Make sure you check them out on their MySpace and their home page.

The violin player in our band, Greg, has made a game and it's in a contest at Intel where he can win some big bucks.

Help him out by voting for his game if you're interested in it. Head to the link below and either download the game and try it out, or just watch the video trailer of what the game is, and then vote a Thumbs Up if you think it's a good game.

Hella bucks at stake so let's help him out. He already won a bit of money for this and if he wins, "they'll" make it into a real game. Good times!

Thanks for your support.

My God, I can't keep my Laptop out of the Hospital. When it gets sick and goes away, I can't make updates or do hardly anything but make music on my DAW (which has been a good thing - cool music to come). But uh anyways, I got it back, and the Fifth Annual OneUp Studios BBQ took place this past weekend and boy did you miss one helluva time. Shael Riley performed, The OneUps rocked the house, and good times were had by all. If you want to see what you missed out on, you can check out the aftermath forum thread here. Cry. Next thing up is The OneUps will be interviewed on "Front Row," a local TV show. A live DVD will be made of the performance/interview. We'll see what the future of that will be... New projects to be announced soon. [Arnold] Stick around. [/Arnold] ~m

May 29, 2007

Hope you all had a good Memorial Day weekend. Except those of you that went camping because camping is stupid. It's the closest thing to time travel. He look, ma, no technology! [shudders] Dale's out and about traveling the country doing cool things. He went to an Anime convention. I'm sure he'll have some cool stuff to talk about when he gets back. I spent the weekend throwing parties and eating other people's food. We're also getting ready for a private party this weekend. The OneUps will be performing at the Skiles wedding. It's going to be awesome. We're adding a new violinist. And yes, I have broken my No Girls rule - it's a girl. This band is just getting crazy. And if you haven't seen us yet - for shame... Check out the show dates on The OneUps' MySpace page. ~m

May 22, 2007

Well... Hmm. Been twenty days. I'm back from wherever I've been - space, girls, the bottom of a bottle of Jack Daniels. Business is comin' up. Our Fifth Annual OneUp Studios BBQ is coming up. If you're coming, I need you to read this post. Very important in making sure this thing kicks off right. Lotta good stuff coming up - mostly with The OneUps. Probably two live DVDs shooting in July, an EP coming soon, and more show dates as we continue to impress Fayetteville, Arkansas and the rest of the world via the Web. I'm having a hard time walking around now because I'm getting recognized by so many people who say, "Dude! I love your band!" And this is seriously coming from young, cute college girls, and as far away as old weird guys with mustaches who just show up at our shows and start dancing with said young college girls. It's good times for sure. People are really starting to freak out about this video game music. That's a good thing. Looking forward to celebrating that this year with you BBQ attendees. Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to go help Jared light these BBQ coals. We're having a mini-BBQ tonite because hey - that's how we roll. ~m

May 2, 2007

April 21, 2007 - Oy

I have been out of commission. I haven't been able to concentrate because of a renegade tooth. Now it is out of my face so I've been catching up on a lot of work. Good stuff: The OneUps killed at the NAMAs. No one walked out of there with clean undies. That's how much we rule. We also got a lot of gigs out of it. The OneUps next gig is Friday, May 11th in Fayetteville, Arkansas. More info on the forum. Bad stuff: Lotta work to do and seemingly not enough time to do it. Good stuff Part II: The OneUps and myself will be featured on Game Music 4 All's upcoming Music EXP Compilation Album to be released early June. That should be fun. Lotta great music will be on there. Check out their site for more info. ~m

April 11, 2007 - Because I Can

Re-discovered a gem from the days of old. Feast your ears on Protection Against Infection DVD Menu Music. Holy crap.

Good news is that the band is pumped about the NAMA Awards. If you voted - thanks. If you didn't - go suck an egg. Bad news is that I'm still crazy.

April 2, 2007 - April Fools

So April Fools was a HUGE success. It was good times. But I think the biggest joke was on General Veers:

Seriously. Good stuff. But we're going to talk about getting together soon for a nice OUS time. Watch the news. Watch out for Vader. ~m

March 30, 2007 - Vote for The OneUps

The OneUps are nominated for a NAMA Award for "Best Jam/Funk Band." This is pretty cool for us. So if you dig the band and think we're the best Jam/Funk Band ever, please take two minutes to vote for us. Here's the link: Vote Here! If you voted, you rock. If you didn't, you still rock. If you're a rock, you roll. ~m

March 28, 2007 - Thanks, Tycho & Gabe!

March 26, 2007 - The OneUps? Live? At PAX?!?

0
Yeah, it's official. The OneUps will be appearing at the Penny Arcade Expo this August. I really hope all you OUS regulars will find a way to make it out. With 30,000 people attending the con this year, and the concert room holding around 6,000 - this will be the biggest and best concert yet. We are tweaking our show big time for this and it's going to be an unforgettable night, so check out the Penny Arcade Forums to find some people to ride along with 'cause if you're not there... damn. ~m

March 24, 2007 - www.TheOneUps.com Coming Soon

So the band is getting its own site very soon. Hopefully this will help people distinguish the band from the label, which people can't seem to do very well. The OneUps are a band of nerds that play video game music. The leader of the band, Mustin, is co-founder and owner of OneUp Studios, which is a record label. The record label puts out albums of arranged music made by various people - sometimes involving people that are in The OneUps, like in the case of their own album, The OneUps Volume 1. This does not, however, lump them all together into one hateable catagory. Thus endeth the lesson. So, in other words - what did you do today? 'Cause I went to a scary place and saw this:

March 23, 2007 - Game Music Central

I was talkin' to my buddy Gerard Marino, composer for God of War and its sequel, about some music stuff, and he did a little name dropping. Game Music Central, he says. I check it out. It's just a single page for now, but from what he tells me it sounds like it's going to be pretty cool. And the first thing planned is - well, I probably shouldn't say. Let me just say that I think it'll be...   neat. ~m

March 22, 2007 - The OneUps Volume Shipped

0

I got in The OneUps Volume 1 yesterday. Spent a good while getting them shipped out to you. So they should be coming soon if you ordered one. Sorry about the wait on that - I didn't think it would take so long. But point is we have 'em in stock and you can get them in a timely matter now. And now? What is thy bidding my master? ~m

March 20, 2007 - SnoCap Store

So we have this SnoCap Store now. It's pretty neat. But someone in Canadia said that they couldn't download the tracks because they're not available to Canadian customers - can anyone confirm that? If so, that's pretty lame and I apologize. Still, being able to download any track you want from any of the OUS albums is pretty neat. You can check it out on our Store page. Also, here in a few days, I'll be making "Album" purchases available to you. This is something SnoCap didn't have before but now the user (me) can put the tracks into actual album bundles for you to buy. Sound good? I think so. ~m

March 17, 2007 - We're Back

Yeah, we said we were done. Yeah, we closed up shop. But we let it fester and you smelled it and you wanted more. Big news coming soon from The OneUps along with more excitement. Poke around the site - things are a lot more streamlined and focused. We'll be changing up content and fixing the bugs for a few days. And check out our EPs page - 8BitMaximo has put together cover art for our EP releases and will continue to do so - two more are coming in the next couple of months and we're sure you're going to love them. Thanks for all of your support and welcome back to OneUp Studios.~m
